Broke-Host MU-Sites

June 7, 2006

As of June 6, 2006, I had 82 sites bookmarked with the tags wpmu and host. I intended to email the administrator of each of these sites in order to request participation in a web-based survey. 14 of the sites were no longer accessible. Those sites I tagged with broken, leaving the original tags in place. (Note that, if you follow these links, you probably won’t see exactly the same 82 and 14 sites that I did on 06/06/06).
Here are the ways in which the links were broken:

  • Technical problems: 10. The most common such problem was “server not found” (4).
  • Hosted account suspended: 2.
  • Site taken down, with reason stated: 2. Spam, in the form of comments and/or trackbacks, was a factor in the demise of shitidid and 911 blogs. Lack of interest was also a stated factor for the latter site.

I don’t see dpblogs.com on your list. Would you be willing to add it? It’s a Digital Photography Blog network. The front page is in the works, but many of the individual blogs are up and doing well.

    Thanks!

Hi. I’m creating a WordPress MU for the education institute that I’m working for. Will let you know once it is up and running.

Great efforts you are putting up here. Cheers.

I’ve wanted this type of tool to allow for bicycle journals since 1999. Now that I have it I will struggle to make it work.
Is there anyone out there with a good grasp of the internals to secure wpmu and make it a fun way to post the daily rides of a long distance bicycle ride? With pictures?

I’m just providing one template as the default. and will be trying to provide the correct tools to help each person.
Is anyone out there having success?

    About time I replied here…
I’ve already had a very good exchange of emails with John. dpblogs I count as a “network,” rather than as a “host,” because you apply for a blog there, rather than simply signing up for one.
Kimmy, as you can see from the “networks” part of the sidebar, you are not the first to set up a WPMU network for an ed. institution.
JAV, I think that you have done the right thing in taking your questions to the WPMU forums, where there are more people reading and replying.

Lets try this again. Netscape 7.2 is being a pain today. :(

I’m bringing my MU install back online at daria.be. I need it to help answer questions over at the WP.com forums and it seems like there’s better support for subdirectories now even though I’ve found a few minor issues still pending.

    Mike,
I’ll add daria.be back into my list of WPMU sites.

with the help of Dan Ray ( this plugin will be offically released this week for the public ) I hired him to create a post by email plugin for the wordpress mu
Each blog user can enable the plugin and use a email account I will provide for free so that they can send in bicycling daily journals via email.
Pocketmail users, cellphone emailing, blackberry or internet cafe visitors can now post about their bicycle rides.
They can visit the post later and add pictures if they choose. You can’t choose a catagory unless you login later and assign a post to a catagory. Until then it shows up as uncatagorized.
